Angel Island Fire Today: Prescribed Burn Sends Smoke Across San Francisco Bay Area as Officials Urge Public Not to Be Alarmed

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, Calif. — Smoke visible across portions of the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday is the result of a planned prescribed burn on Angel Island, not an uncontrolled wildfire, according to California State Parks.

The prescribed burn began at approximately 10:30 a.m. and is expected to treat about 260 acres of grassland and coastal scrub on Angel Island. The operation is part of an ongoing vegetation management program designed to reduce wildfire risk, remove accumulated dry fuels, control invasive plant species and promote the growth of native vegetation.

Officials said residents throughout the Bay Area may continue to see smoke drifting across the region for up to three days after the burn. While the smoke may appear concerning, authorities emphasized that it is an expected part of the planned operation and urged the public not to call 911 solely to report smoke originating from Angel Island.

Most of Angel Island State Park remains open to visitors during the prescribed burn. However, several areas, including portions of the Ida Trail, Sunset Trail, and the summit of Mount Livermore, have been temporarily closed for safety. Visitors are encouraged to obey all posted closures and follow directions from park and fire personnel.

Prescribed burns are widely recognized as an important wildfire prevention tool. By removing excess vegetation under carefully controlled conditions, land managers help reduce the amount of fuel available for future wildfires while also improving ecosystem health and supporting native habitats.

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and smoke dispersion throughout the operation. Residents with respiratory conditions are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure if smoke is noticeable in their area.

The prescribed burn remains under the supervision of California State Parks and cooperating fire agencies, and no uncontrolled wildfire has been reported on Angel Island.
