Grapevine Fire in California Today: I-5 Open After Rose Fire Lane Closures, High-Wind Advisory Remains

GRAPEVINE, CALIFORNIA — Interstate 5 through California’s Grapevine corridor is open following temporary lane restrictions caused by the Rose Fire, while motorists continue to face a high-wind advisory in the area.

The Rose Fire began Monday, August 31, near Interstate 5 and Grapevine Road in Kern County. CAL FIRE reported that the brush fire burned approximately 15 acres, with the Kern County Fire Department serving as the agency with jurisdiction. The cause remained under investigation.

The blaze temporarily disrupted traffic on southbound I-5 as emergency crews responded. California Highway Patrol reported that traffic was diverted while firefighters worked in the area, with the No. 3 and No. 4 southbound lanes later reopened after the fire’s forward progress was stopped.

By September 2, the latest Caltrans highway information no longer listed the Rose Fire as causing an active closure or lane restriction on I-5 through the Grapevine. This indicates that the fire-related disruption has cleared and the major north-south route is operating again.

However, drivers should remain alert because Caltrans continues to report a high-wind advisory from the Los Angeles-Kern County line to about five miles south of the State Route 99 junction at Grapevine Road. Travel is specifically not recommended for campers, trailers and permit loads while the advisory remains in effect.

The recent fire also occurred during a period of heightened traffic concerns in the corridor. On the same evening, a separate collision involving semitrailers occurred on northbound I-5 near Grapevine Road, with at least one truck catching fire and lanes being blocked by debris. That incident was separate from the Rose Fire.

For motorists traveling through the Grapevine today, the latest confirmed situation is that I-5 is open, but strong winds remain a potential hazard, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

Drivers should check Caltrans and CHP updates before traveling, as conditions in the mountain corridor can change quickly because of weather, crashes or renewed fire activity.
