Henry Herbert Greenwood Obituary, Portland, Oregon, Death: 77-Year-Old Man Dies After Five-Vehicle Highway 26 Crash

PORTLAND, Ore. — Henry Herbert Greenwood, 77, of Portland, Oregon, has died following a major five-vehicle collision on Highway 26 in Clatsop County. The crash occurred Friday evening, August 28, 2026, near milepost 24 and left Greenwood dead and several other people injured.

According to the Oregon State Police, Greenwood was driving a gray Honda Fit eastbound on Highway 26 at approximately 5:18 p.m. when, for reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane. The Honda sideswiped a westbound Tesla Model S before colliding head-on with a Toyota Tacoma pickup.

The impact triggered a chain reaction involving additional vehicles. An eastbound Volkswagen Golf attempted to avoid the Honda as it moved back toward its proper lane but was subsequently rear-ended by a Ford F-350 pickup. Emergency crews responded from several surrounding fire and medical agencies as the roadway became blocked.

Greenwood was critically injured and flown by Life Flight to a Portland-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. A passenger traveling in his Honda was also airlifted with serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was hospitalized with serious injuries, while four passengers in that vehicle suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. Other people involved reported minor injuries or were not hurt.

Highway 26 was closed for approximately five hours while Oregon State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage. Multiple emergency agencies, including Medix Ambulance Service, Banks Fire District, Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District and Elsie Vinemaple Rural Fire Protection District, assisted with the response.

Investigators have not determined why Greenwood’s vehicle crossed the centerline, and authorities have not publicly identified any specific contributing factor. The investigation remains ongoing.

Greenwood’s death has left family, friends and those who knew him mourning a sudden loss. As investigators continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision, loved ones are left to remember his life and the years he shared with those around him.
