Joseph Carroll Pilot Crash Miami, FL – 55-Year-Old Captain Identified After Fatal Amazon Cargo Plane Crash at Miami International Airport

MIAMI, Florida — Joseph Carroll, 55, has been identified as the captain of the Amazon cargo aircraft involved in the deadly runway crash at Miami International Airport, an accident that claimed five lives on the ground and left several others injured.

Carroll was one of two crew members aboard Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air for Amazon. The aircraft was returning to Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on September 6 when it overran Runway 30 during landing and struck airport equipment and multiple vehicles before coming to rest.

Authorities identified Carroll alongside Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, 37, the flight’s first officer. Both pilots survived the crash and were taken to a Miami hospital for treatment before being released, according to authorities. CBS News reported that Carroll is listed as a captain with 21 Air, while Silva Molina served as a first officer.

The crash caused extensive destruction around the airport. The aircraft struck a white van carrying several people and another vehicle after leaving the runway. Five people on the ground were killed, while five others were injured, including the two pilots. Three injured people remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the runway overrun. Investigators are examining flight-data and cockpit-voice recorder information, aircraft performance, weather conditions and the actions taken during the landing. The agency has not yet determined a probable cause.

As the investigation continues, attention remains focused on understanding what led to the devastating accident and honoring those who lost their lives. Carroll’s identification as the aircraft’s captain adds another dimension to a tragedy that has deeply affected the Miami community and the families of the victims.
