Lil Durk Trial Update: Key Cooperating Witness Testifies as Federal Murder-for-Hire Case Enters Critical Phase in Los Angeles

The federal murder-for-hire trial of Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, entered a pivotal stage as prosecutors presented testimony from key cooperating witnesses in a Los Angeles courtroom. The testimony is central to the government’s effort to prove that Banks directed a plot targeting rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 killing of fellow rapper King Von. Banks has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and the allegations remain unproven as the trial continues.

Among the government’s most significant witnesses was Kasey “OTF Jam” Hester, who has admitted participating in the 2022 shooting that resulted in the death of Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, Quando Rondo’s cousin. Hester testified under a cooperation agreement, describing the alleged planning of the attack and the events leading up to the fatal shooting. During cross-examination, defense attorneys challenged his credibility, pointing to prior statements, recorded jail calls and the benefits he hopes to receive in exchange for his testimony.

Jurors also heard testimony from Kavon Grant, a former associate and assistant to Lil Durk, who discussed his relationship with the rapper and events surrounding the alleged conspiracy. Prosecutors contend the testimony helps establish a chain of communication connecting Banks to the alleged murder-for-hire plot, while the defense argues that cooperating witnesses are attempting to reduce their own criminal exposure by shifting blame onto the rapper.

Federal prosecutors allege that the conspiracy was motivated by retaliation following King Von’s fatal shooting in Atlanta in 2020. According to the indictment, the intended target was Quando Rondo, but Robinson was instead killed during the August 2022 ambush outside a Los Angeles gas station. Defense attorneys maintain that the government has not presented reliable evidence proving Banks ordered or financed the attack and have urged jurors to scrutinize the credibility of cooperating witnesses.

The trial is expected to continue with additional witness testimony, forensic evidence and legal arguments before the case is ultimately submitted to the jury. If convicted, Lil Durk faces the possibility of a lengthy federal prison sentence. Until a verdict is reached, he remains presumed innocent under the law, and the allegations against him have not been proven in court.
