OMAHA, NEBRASKA — The High Plains Community Schools community is mourning the loss of Payton Lorrainne Ackerson, a 16-year-old student-athlete from Polk, Nebraska, who died following an e-bike accident.

According to her published obituary, Payton succumbed to injuries in the early morning hours of September 6, 2026, at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. She was surrounded by family and loved ones during her final moments.

Payton was born on April 26, 2010, and was a sophomore at High Plains Community Schools. She was known within the school community for her involvement in athletics, including volleyball and basketball. Her participation in school sports helped her build close friendships with teammates, coaches and classmates.

Those who knew Payton have remembered her as someone who was always willing to help others. Her obituary notes the impact she made through her friendships and the support she received from the community following her death.

Her passing has brought profound sadness to her family, friends, classmates and teammates. At just 16, Payton had many years ahead of her, making the loss particularly difficult for those who watched her grow and develop both in school and through athletics.

Funeral arrangements have been announced. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, September 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place at the church on Saturday, September 12, at 10 a.m., with burial at Calvary Cemetery near Clarks.

In lieu of flowers, Payton’s family has requested donations to the Grand Island Humane Society in her memory or encouraged people to consider adopting a pet.

As the High Plains community comes together to remember Payton, her family and friends are left with the memories of a young woman whose kindness, friendships and enthusiasm for life touched many people. Her memory will continue through those who knew and loved her.
