ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that temporarily disrupted traffic and prompted a significant emergency response as first responders worked to secure the scene and assist those involved. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on the northbound span of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Preliminary information indicates that a 76-year-old man operating a three-wheeled motorcycle lost control while attempting to avoid another vehicle. The motorcycle struck the bridge’s outside guardrail, ejecting the rider, who suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified the other vehicle involved in the incident. Emergency personnel responded quickly, temporarily closing portions of the bridge to allow investigators to examine the crash site, collect evidence and safely remove the damaged vehicle. The temporary closure resulted in traffic delays before all northbound lanes were reopened later in the day. Investigators are continuing to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the crash. As is standard procedure, the Florida Highway Patrol is reviewing witness statements, physical evidence and any available surveillance or dash-camera footage to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Officials have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact investigators. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is one of Florida’s most heavily traveled transportation corridors, connecting Pinellas and Manatee counties across Tampa Bay. While serious crashes on the bridge are relatively uncommon, incidents often result in temporary lane closures because of the bridge’s limited access points and the need for thorough crash investigations. Authorities have extended their condolences to the victim’s family as the investigation continues. Additional information, including the identity of the other vehicle involved and any further findings, is expected to be released once the Florida Highway Patrol completes its investigation. Motorists are encouraged to remain attentive while traveling across the bridge and to follow posted traffic advisories whenever emergency crews are responding to incidents.
