Norfolk Base Lockdown: Naval Station Norfolk Returns to Normal Operations After Heightened Security

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA — Naval Station Norfolk has returned to normal operations after a brief period of heightened security that temporarily changed access procedures at the major U.S. Navy installation.

The precautionary measures were announced Monday evening, August 31, with some gates closed and other entrances operating with reduced lanes. Personnel were warned to expect delays and allow additional time when traveling onto the installation.

Naval Station Norfolk said the measures were intended to ensure the safety and security of sailors, civilian employees, families and the installation. Officials said they were monitoring the situation in coordination with law-enforcement and security partners and would adjust the security posture as necessary.
